the Lord said to the Snow

by Frank Jones

For to the snow [God] says, 'Fall on the earth,' and to the downpour and the rain, 'Be strong.' (Job 37:6)

As I sit here in the comfort of a home provided by the LORD, central Virginia is under a snow and sleet warning. Total accumulations could be over a foot; but who knows if the LORD will allow the prognosticators to be right. There are those who would seek to deny the LORD by declaring that Mother Nature has given us this store of wintery mix. Mother Nature is a non-entity but our great LORD and God, Jesus Christ, is eternal.

In the passage before us, Eliphaz is declaring to Job the majestic wonders of our God. Science so-called has not tarnished this majesty. His wonders are various and glorious. Brethren, the weather is under the direct control of the LORD. It is by His direct Word that the weather patterns exist. It is by His verbal proclamation that the heavens release its storehouse of snow or rain. The measure, whether great or small, shallow or flood, is all under the determinative direction of the LORD. The swirls of black tumultuous clouds are all under His express command.

If there is one way that mankind expresses its rebellion against the will of God, it is concerning the weather. If the sun is out, it is too hot or "it is in my eyes." If the clouds refuse to rain, man curses under the shadow of famine. Then if the clouds come in as a flood, man stands amazed with vile contempt. Instead of being in awe, fearing before an all-powerful LORD, man trembles with anger over the sweep of an hurricane or tornado.

On this LORD's Day, whether snow, rain, or sun, magnify the God of Heaven and earth. Stand with heart-felt awe of the wisdom and majesty of Jesus Christ. It is His Word which sustains all things. Wherever you are at and whatever conditions, look and with joy expressed at the majesty of Jesus Christ in all things. Yes, even the weather.
