The Lord is my Portion

by Frank Jones

The LORD is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words (Psalm 119:57).

The LORD is my portion. This term, portion, refers to having a "share" of some form of material advantage. It represents a part of "gain" that comes into our possession. The psalmist links his obedience to the truth that he has taken the Lord as his portion; his share in this life. The Lord is his possession, his material stability, his inheritance, his portion.

This makes covetousness of lesser things more dangerous than it initially appears to people. Thomas Le Blanc points this out for our consideration.

"He is an exceedingly covetous fellow to whom God is not sufficient; and he is an exceeding fool to whom the world is sufficient. For God is an inexhaustible treasury of all riches, sufficing innumerable men; while the world has mere trifles and fascinations to offer, and leads the soul into deep and sorrowful poverty" (Treasury of David, vol. 5, 260).

Contentment and true prosperity comes to a people who have the LORD as their portion. It removes insecurity, covetousness, and fears. Are we content with Christ as our gifted portion (Hebrews 13:5-6)?
