The infection is more virulent than Covid-19. It leaves no one untouched. It follows and haunts us and there is no face covering, no protective equipment or vaccine which can rid us of this disease in our very bones. It has corrupted every thought, word and action which pass through us. And we are oh so weary of it. We are so weary of our sin.
If you are, in truth, weary of your sin, this is God’s kindness to you. The weariness of Covid, the weariness of suffering–these can surely drive us to Jesus. But even in our riches, whether that is material blessing, familial comforts, the strength, beauty, honour and pleasure which this world might offer–and yes, even in the awareness of the spiritual blessings which God pours out on our lives–we experience the ‘repining restlessness’ of sinful hearts. If you are rich and restless, outwardly and inwardly blessed but longing for a deeper filling, if you love the Lord but are weary at your own failure, your own falls, and your own lack of love for him–allow your weariness to toss you to his breast. ‘Come to me,’ he says, ‘and I will give you rest.’ So, come.
