The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. (John 10:33)
For the past couple of years, our church has had the privilege to sit at the feet of the Lord Jesus as we have progressed through the gospel of John. We are having our pre-conceived imaginations about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ challenged and transfigured. We are having our lifestyles reproved and straightened. We are having sound doctrine established and our faith growing stronger.
The purpose of the gospel of John is explicit. And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name (20:30-31). John, by inspiration, selectively chose certain signs to record for the purpose of bringing people to a saving understanding in Christ. Therefore, the gospel of John has within its contents the sinfulness of man, the purposes of Christ, and His death, burial, and resurrection.
What has interested me is that in spite of the gospel of John possessing the elements of the plan of salvation, the emphasis in John is that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. In other words, the gospel message in John focuses on who Jesus is rather than certain facts about Jesus. Who is Jesus? Jesus Christ is God incarnate. Even the Jews understood that Jesus was claiming to be God in human flesh.
This puzzled me. Why the repeated emphasis that Jesus is God as essential to true belief? I believe that the answer lies in the nature of man. Fundamentally when a man is confronted with the claims of Christ what is challenged? The answer is, who is their God. We understand this when it comes to foreign missions but in America the Apostle John’s emphasis has been sadly neglected.
Reader, who is your God? Is it Jesus Christ or imaginations about Christ? Is your God Jesus Christ as described and illumined in the pages of the Bible? Do you sit at His feet and hear His Word as words coming from God and His Throne? Jesus Christ is God. He is the message of salvation and the message of the Apostles.
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. (II Corinthians 4:3-5)
